Compared to most other wine producing countries New Zealand's wine industry is still very much in its infancy. Before the 1970s wine production in New Zealand was largely limited to the north island, and was almost entirely for the domestic market. This all changed in the mid 1970s when the first Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted in the Marlborough region of the south island, and suddenly the wine world was introduced to vibrant, fruity Sauvignon Blanc with an aromatic intensity rarely seen before.
The success of this grape variety attracted interest from wine
producers around the world, and suddenly investment started to
flood into Marlborough. With this investment came experienced
winemakers keen to try new varieties and explore new regions, and
before long the Central Otago region further south was identified
as the perfect environment for Pinot Noir. Suddenly New Zealand had
a second string to its bow, and since then the industry has grown
and grown.
There is a lot more to the wines of New Zealand now than these two
grape varieties and regions, and this evening will be your
opportunity to taste a range of wines from across the
country.
